TOOLS & EQUIPMENT: SAFETY

It may seem like common sense, but safety is critical in this industry. Here at Phoenix Liners we take safety extremely seriously. You may have seen people spraying coatings with just a dust mask. This is NOT acceptable, and if a shop or employer tells you it’s no big deal, go somewhere else. You bet your life when you take a chance on safety. Why risk it?

3M™ Full Face Respirator

Personal protection equipment (PPE) is absolutely required when applying any of our protective coatings (and anyone else’s for that matter). This full face respirator from 3M is what we use every day, every spray. The durable, comfortable design allows our spray technicians to see exactly what they’re doing, while providing easy breathing throughout the application. Using a re-fillable particulate filter (shown below), this is a must for anyone spraying protective coatings.

3M™ Multi Gas/Vapor Cartridge (P100)

These cartridge filters are designed to protect against organic vapors, acid gasses, ammonia, methylamine, and formaldehyde. You might think, “I’m not really using any of those things, why do I need this?” The short answer is it’s always better to be safe than sorry. The long answer is more involved, but basically comes down to the fact that the B-sides of any polyurea system are likely to contain amines, and this filter protects against those. These are a necessity when dealing with bed liners.

3M™ Organic Vapor Cartridge (07046)

These organic vapor cartridges are designed to protect against certain organic vapors. These are typically used on any 3M respirators with a bayonet style attachment. The trapezoid design allows for low, swept back positioning on the mask, and doesn’t obstruct vision.  Filters are then attached to this cartridge using retainers (pictured below).

3M™ 5P71 Particulate Filters P/95

You can’t use just any old dust mask when spraying polyurea. It must be capable of filtering out super fine particles to ensure healthy breathing. Therefore, we recommend the 3M™ 5P71 Particulate Filter for all spray applications.

NIOSH approved for environments containing certain oil and non-oil based particles. These are prefilters made for use with 6000 series cartridges. The P notation denotes compliance with the P95 standard. This means the 5P71 is useful against dust and mists containing oil. Used with the 501 retainer (below), it’s a good addition to an organic vapor cartridge, and makes it easy to keep your organic filter working well.

3M™ 501 Filter Carriage

These retainers are what you use to hold the particulate filters in place on top of the filter adapters. Make sure you get some of these, and keep extras on hand. Holding filters on with masking tape is not an option — it’s dangerous to your health, and plus, it just looks terrible.

3M™ 7142 Peel off Lens Cover

Keep the lens of your face mask clean at all times. These peel off lens covers ensure you are better able to see your tools, equipment, and substrate.

Any time the mask seems to have impaired vision, simply peel away the existing lens cover and replace it with a new one. These are invaluable for keeping your face mask in good shape, because who wants to have to try to get bedliner off their mask?

3M™ 7000 Series Half Mask Reusable Respirator

These half mask respirators from 3M™ are perfect for prep work, or when observing an applicator spraying (from a distance). All respirator cartridge / filter combos, cartridges, filters, and pre-filters are sold separately. This allows for easy re-use of these masks for any chemical or biohazard protection necessary.

Additional Info
  • Durable silicone seal for all-day wear.
  • Exhale valve for fog-free work.
  • We recommend this mask for people that scuff and prep multiple trucks per day.

Allegro® 1-Worker 1/4 HP Pump & 100′ Hose Full Face Respirator Supplied Air System

3M™ PAPR System

PAPR stands for “Powered Air Personal Respirator,” and this system uses a motorized air source to filter and clean ambient air before it is delivered to the user. PAPR systems can use many different types of filters, such as HEPA, Vapor protection, or simple particulate filtration. We recently acquired one of these systems for our spray techs, and we’ll be assessing it over the coming few months.

Replacement Frame for Cartridge (A)

These aren’t super easy to damage, but believe us when we say, it does happen. If your frame is bent or damaged, please replace it as soon as possible. Damage to the frame can cause any of the following issues:

  • Off ratio spraying
  • Loss of back end of a cartridge (BIG mess)
  • Only partial cartridges being able to be sprayed

If you are unsure which frame you need, please shoot us a photo or visit our short video section for further information. You may also find other parts for this gun system in our Parts Guide.

Replacement Frame for Cartridge (B)

Similar to replacement frame for A cartridges, these are not typically easy to damage. However, if your frame is bent or damaged, please replace it as soon as possible.

Replacement Handle for Cartridge Gun

If the handle of your gun is damaged or broken, it’s going to make every job a pain in the neck. To be fair, we haven’t seen a ton of issues with damage to gun handles, but we always keep extras on hand in case something weird happens. The most common issue we see is due to bed liner buildup which makes the trigger operate less than perfectly.

Refer to the photo to see which parts the handle replacement assembly contains. If you’re unsure which part you need, send us a picture or visit our video section for more information.

Replacement 90° Elbow for Cartridge (A)

These elbows should last for 80-120 sprays. However, just like anything else, this may vary  greatly — it could be much longer or shorter. If your 90° elbow gets covered in product, or anything affects the elbow’s ability to lock onto the mixer or tubing, go ahead and replace the elbow.

Additional Info
  • These connectors should never be easily removed without the press and release. If it is easily removed go ahead and replace the elbow.
  • Watch our video on elbows if you want more information.
  • We recommend you always have 1 extra elbow. Otherwise you’ll be unable to service your customers while you wait for this inexpensive yet necessary part.
  • Please refer to the gun diagram in the PARTS GUIDE SECTION for more details and other available replacement parts

Replacement 90° Elbow for Cartridge (B)

Designed to work only with Cartridge B, which has a different configuration than Cartridge A, this elbow has a male and female side. The female side connects to the static mixer, while the male side is inserted into the nylon tubing. Both connections should be checked every 10-15 sprays. Make sure each piece is snug and not easily removable. If it is, replace the elbow (and possibly the tubing as well).

Additional Info
  • Over time the nylon tubing and the male connection will become easily moved.
  • If the elbow is not replaced and it pops either off the mixer or blows out of the tubing you will have a big mess on your hands.
  • We recommend you always have 1 extra elbow on hand. Otherwise, you will be unable to service your customers while you wait for this inexpensive yet necessary part.
  • Please refer to the gun diagram in the PARTS GUIDE SECTION for more details and other available replacement parts

Nylon Tubing

This nylon tubing can last through multiple elbow changes. It works with both types of cartridges (A) and (B). If it becomes covered in overspray, or if either replacement does not seem to fit correctly, it’s time to replace the nylon tubing. If this nylon tube comes off due to a poor fit while you’re spraying, you’ll end up with a huge mess, so it is always best to make sure it’s in good shape before beginning.

Additional Info
  • We recommend you always have extra tubing on hand. Otherwise, you will be unable to service your customers while you wait for this inexpensive yet necessary part.
  • Please refer to the gun diagram in the PARTS GUIDE SECTION for more details and other available replacement parts

8″ Static Mixer for Cartridge (A)

Integral to spraying in a cartridge-based system. You must have multiples of these on hand at all times. This 8″ static mixer is designed for cartridge (A), and is not interchangeable with mix tips for cartridge (B).

Mix Tip for Cartridge (B)

Integral to spraying in a cartridge-based system. You must have multiples of these on hand at all times. This mix tip is designed for cartridge (B), and is not interchangeable with mix tips for cartridge (A).

Additional Info
  • Single check valve square mixer
  • Dual check valve mixers available (pricing may be higher)
  • Angled mix tips available as well (pricing may be higher)

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT: SHOP EQUIPMENT

Good shop and bed liner equipment will increase your output enormously. And of course, the opposite is also true — bad equipment just makes life harder. While you don’t have to use any of the items shown below, you’ll have a much better time if you do.

6″ Cup Brush, Nylon Filament, 5/8″-11 Thread, 2500 max.RPM

Our spray technicians regularly use these to scuff the substrate. The nylon cup brush increases efficiency and accuracy versus trying to sand by hand. And since scuffing is a mandatory step in the process, using a tool to make it easier helps to complete more jobs each day. Once you use one, you won’t go back.

Additional Info
  • This cup brush has a life expectancy of 30-40 average truck beds.
  • If you are wearing the cub brush out in less than 20 substrates you should definitely watch the video on scuffing.
  • We recommend that you always scuff the back ledge below the back windows of the cab by hand so as not to cause damage to the cab. See our issues photos for better explanation.

Variable Speed Polisher

We recommend using a 7″ variable speed polisher with the nylon cup brush. The polisher should have a 5/8″ connection.

Your mileage may vary, but we really do not recommend paying a lot for this polisher. This is because some more expensive tools will burn out with extended use. We also don’t recommend using battery operated tools for this purpose, as sometimes they don’t allow you to complete the scuffing process without multiple charged batteries.

3 Stage Desiccant Dryer – Devilbiss

Moisture is the enemy of spray on coatings, especially during the application process. What you really want to avoid is introducing moisture into the air you’re using to spray out the material. That’s why we use this 3 stage desiccant dryer on our pneumatic lines. It removes any additional moisture, and ensures completely clean air throughout our spray system. A definite must for any serious application.

Additional Info
The Devilbiss Dad 500 3 Stage Air Filtration System is used for the ultimate clean, dry air to ensure optimal spray in bed liner finishes and results.

  1. The first stage consists of a separator that removes particulates to 5 microns.
  2. The second stage of the air filtration system is a coalescent filter that removes particulate down to .01 microns
  3. The final stage brings the air to a -40F dew point removing all traces of moisture. It is well suited for low to medium production and comes with a desiccant change filter as well as a mounting bracket. It also includes automatic drains on the first two stages eliminating the need to manually drain the system.
  • We do recommend draining this system to optimize the life of the desiccant beads.
  • Weight 34.75 lbs

WARNING: This product can expose you to Lead a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.

Desiccant Dryer Tune-Up Kit – Devilbiss

Keeping your desiccant dryer well-maintained is critical to ensuring successful applications. This kit includes desiccant beads as well as a replacement filter. Typically we recommend using this tune-up kit every 3rd time you would be replacing the desiccant beads.

Additional Info

Package contains:

  • Desiccant refill (DEV-DAD1)
  • Filter Element Kit (DEV-HAF6)
  • Weight: 9.5 lbs

Desiccant Refill packs DeVilbiss DAD1

These refill packs are designed for the Desiccant Air Dryer System. These desiccant beads work to collect various types of impurities (aerosols, dirt, etc.) to help keep your air compressor and humidity levels balanced. We’ll probably sound like a broken record, but keeping your clean air system well-maintained can be the difference that prevents serious problems in your applications.

Additional Info
  • These beads will change color from white to pink as they become more saturated.
  • It is important to check the filters every week, and replace them every one to six months, depending on how many liners you are spraying per week/month (roughly 30-ish full applications). This will ensure optimum performance.
  • This product is made specifically for the DEVDAD500 3 Stage desiccant dryer.

DeVilbiss HAF-28 Replacement Coalescing Filter

Pneumatic tools do their best work with cleaner air. This two-stage filtration system provides consistent clean air. The first stage removes water, oil, and dirt down to 0.5 microns, while the second stage further filters down to 0.01 microns. That’s really small. And that ensures your pneumatic tools will perform at their best for flawless spray every time.

Additional Info
  • The centrifugal filter in the first stage removes water, oil, and dirt down to 0.5 microns.
  • The second stage coalescing filter further filters dirt, oil, and water to 0.01 microns.
  • We recommend replacing this filter on a regular basis to provide cleaner and drier air for every spray gun in your garage.

DeVilbiss HAF-6 Replacement Filter Element

Filter elements need to be changed on a regular basis to keep machinery working optimally. This replacement filter works with the DAD-500 Desiccant Air Dryer System. This filter should generally  be changed every 6 months.

DeVilbiss HAF-8 Replacement Plastic Bowl

Typically, this bowl does not have issues. However, on occasion too much pressure builds within the system, and this bowl cracks. If this occurs, you will not feel as though you are getting good pressure or super clean air. We recommend you check on this bowl whenever you are changing your desiccant beads, or in the event you are having an issue with your system.

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT: SUPPLIES

If you’re spraying a lot of coatings, you’re going to go through these like a hot knife through butter. We recommend always keeping these items in stock in relatively large quantities. These are the basics you’ll always need to keep work flowing. Because having to run out to get more wastes time, and that wastes money.

3M 06656 Crepe Paper Automotive Refinish Masking Tape

This tape is designed specifically for the critical paint / bed liner masking processes used in the collision repair industry. We use this on every job.

Proprietary rubber-based adhesive delivers instant adhesion to all vehicle surfaces, and has good holding power for fast and efficient application. The specially-treated paper backing offers solvent and moisture resistance that minimizes bleed through, It also delivers a controlled unwind that makes tape easier to handle. The semi-smooth backing is thin and conformable so it produces sharp, clean, quality spray jobs. With its balanced construction the tape sticks, stays and removes cleanly. It’s an efficient masking tool that saves time and money.

Additional Info
  • 28 lb/in tensile strength
  • 60 yds length
  • 2″ width

WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals which are known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.

Tremaco Headsock – One Size Fits All

The headsock (balaclava) gives a bit of extra protection for spray technicians. We keep multiples of these on hand for our spray techs, which helps keep their gear cleaner, especially on hot, sweaty days.

Plus, it makes you feel like a race car driver. Creepy mannequin head not included.

WireTrim™ TrueLine HD Edge Cutting Tape

WireTrim Edge Cutting Tape is made specifically for trimming through strong coatings from the bottom up.

It uses a small high-strength cutting filament, adhered to the edge of adhesive tape. This is positioned along the desired trim line where the coating is to be applied. After applying the coating, the filament is pulled upwards from beneath the new coating. This achieves a clean cut from the bottom up, and separates the masking material and tape for easy removal from the border of the new coating. Done correctly, it produces a perfect edge without leaving a mark or in any way damaging the exposed surface or disturbing the adhesion of the new coating.

Additional Info
  • 1/4″ x 100 ft
  • Medium-tack adhesive, designed for applications where less adhesive strength is preferred.
  • Contains a 0.010″ diameter high-tensile metal wire filament.
  • Used for thicker, harder, and aggregate-filled coatings

WireTrim™ FiberLine (Fiber) Edge Cutting Tape

FiberLine is slightly different from the other edge cutting tapes because it has a braided synthetic filament rather than actual wire. This allows it to conform easily to compound curves and tight corners. We use this for tricky areas that need special attention to detail.

Additional Info
  • 1/4″ x 100 ft
  • Medium-tack adhesive, designed for applications where less adhesive strength is preferred.
  • Contains a braided synthetic fiber filament.
  • Cuts through non-abrasive coatings

WireTrim™ RedLine HD Edge Cutting Tape

RedLine allows trimming of thicker, harder, and aggregate-filled coatings. It’s stickier (high-tack, full body adhesive), meaning that it works well for especially difficult application areas. We break this out when we know we’re going to have an extra thick coating, and need the additional adhesion and cutting force.

Additional Info
  • 1/4″ x 90 ft
  • High-tack, full body adhesive, designed for difficult applications.
  • Contains a 0.010″ diameter metal wire filament.
  • Used for thicker, harder, aggregate-filled coatings.

Tyvek Suits: L, XL, 2XL

These are a must have item. You should never attempt to spray polyurea without wearing one of these protective suits — they are mandatory. They are durable and long-lasting, but nevertheless you’ll want to keep multiples on hand.

Additional Info
  • Comfort fit design based on extensive wearer input to provide the most comfortable garment design that: enables a greater range of movement while stretching and bending, provides a more tailored fit, offers reinforcement in high stress areas for fewer blowouts, utilizes a longer zipper for easier donning and doffing and an elastic waist to better position the garment
  • Laydown collar
  • Elastic opening for tighter fit at wrist and ankles
  • Tyvek garments are composed of flash spun high density polyethylene which creates a unique, nonwoven material available only from DuPont

DynaGrip Latex Gloves

These are also a must have item. You should never attempt to spray polyurea without wearing latex gloves. Our spray technicians like these more than others we’ve tried, although there are other options that could work.

Additional Info
  • Powder-free examination grade latex
  • Sturdy yet flexible 7 mil thickness
  • Beaded cuff for easy on/off
  • Textured surface for excellent grip
  • Delivers fit, comfort, flexibility, sensitivity and performance
  • Easy slip-on

0.31 Mil Plastic Sheeting

One of the most important parts of the application process is preparation. This includes extensive taping / covering of any areas you’re not spraying with plastic sheeting. Overspray is a serious concern with every application, and keeping areas you don’t want sprayed covered is the easiest method for success.

0.31 mil plastic is extremely thin, and is used to cover the sides of the truck bed, where there’s typically not as much overspray. See our video section for a quick explainer video on the difference.

6 Mil Plastic Sheeting

6 mil plastic is used to cover all of the cab, including the back and side windows, the windshield, hood, grill, and even the front bumper. This is because overspray tends to hang in the air, and collect on flat surfaces as it falls toward the ground. It’s best to cover these areas with thicker plastic to ensure adequate coverage and protection.

Again, see our video section for an explainer video on applying plastic to a typical truck.

Don’t hesitate to get the industrial coating supplies you need to make your job that much easier.
